Sexual Tantra

In classical Buddhist and Vedic Tantra, the focus is often on the union of masculine and feminine principles as a means to spiritual enlightenment- the °Divine.

°Divine union, does not meant that it cannot happen with more than one person, however, for this to be true and Divine, it does mean that it is done `with purpose` with the awareness and enlightenment that comes in recognising each and every partner as the Divine and being recognised as the divine.

Here are some references and perspectives on multiple partners within these traditions.

Buddhist Tantra

Vamachara  (Left-Hand Tantra ):

This path takes on a more esoteric and perhaps unconventional view and practices that transcend norms and use all aspects of life as a means to spiritual awakening. The practices may include activities that are considered taboo or forbidden such as consuming alcohol, meat, and engaging in sexual rituals

Clearly, how can this be seen as an activity that leads to spiritual awakening ?!

It is often often misunderstood and misrepresented in modern texts and modern use leading to a deformation of its nature and purpose. The thought behind it is that with purpose and sentience  we get to love and accept what is conventionally "forbidden," we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and the universe, ultimately becoming self aware and liberated… ?! maybe something like Siddharta ?!

Maithuna (se*ual union):

Although traditionally it involves a single partner, some interpretations and practices within Left-Hand Tantra may include multiple partners as a way to explore and transcend dualities. It can be seen as being reduced to purely sexual practices without the deeper spiritual significance.

So is it just about Pillow talk and Se* ?

Well, even though it involves sexual union, its never really just as simple and clear as that, as the base goal is spiritual growth, transcending physical desires and the realization of the divine nature within the self, and of course, the other.  Id say, once you have the divine self mastered, then the `other` happens naturally.

On side of lets share and invite others, Maithuna is practiced under the guidance of a guru to ensure it is done with respect, consent, and the right spiritual intentions.

It is a profound practice that highlights the sacredness of sexual energy when directed towards spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

Vedic Tantra

Jyotirmaya Purusha (Being made of light ): one of my favourites..and über awesome.

It focuses on the principles of light and illumination associated with Vedic deities like Agni(fire), Soma (moon), Vayu (wind), and Surya (sun) and of course, the union of Shiva and Shakti as they are all of the above. It’s all about awakening the inner light through practices like meditation, chanting mantras, and fire rituals.

As with everything, there are interpretations. This practice can also recognise the importance of multiple relationships in the context of spiritual growth and energy exchange. However, these practices should not be mainstream and are often considered more advanced or specialised.

Shaktimaya Devi (Goddess made of energy):

You guessed it, its all about harnesing the °Divine Goddess and the absolute dynamic strength and power of Shakti, the divine feminine energy we ALL have within us.

Combining the two can enhance illumination and channel energy for spiritual growth and self-realisation.

And now, for the end spoiler! What is my take on all of this ? Well, nothing is as straight cut as it seems and frankly, references in or from old texts are often symbolic and should be understood within the broader context of Tantra, which emphasises the transformation of ordinary experiences into spiritual insights.

..Pretty much what I seem to be trying to do within my daily life…be aware, be present, stay in the now and allow the Experience without feeling like I am going to lose my shit, while also acting like a Goddess and GoD all in one is more than enough for me at the moment.
